Understanding Hypothyroidism and Natural Desiccated Thyroid (NDT): My Personal Experience and Insights

Understanding Hypothyroidism and Natural Desiccated Thyroid (NDT): My Personal Experience and Insights

As someone living with hypothyroidism, I’ve come to understand the challenges that come with managing this condition. Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, can affect everything from energy levels and weight management to mood and overall quality of life. It's something that many people, including myself, have had to learn to manage. Recently, I’ve been exploring different treatment options, especially concerning thyroid medications, and I’ve come across information that I believe could be important for others in a similar situation.

Let me be clear upfront: I am not advising anyone to stop taking their prescribed thyroid medication. In fact, I continue to take mine and will be discussing this new information with my own GP to see if there’s an opportunity to optimize my treatment plan. I am sharing my personal viewpoint and recent findings, and if anything resonates with you, I encourage you to speak to your healthcare provider to determine the best course of action for your unique health needs.

The Basics of Hypothyroidism and Its Common Treatments

Hypothyroidism occurs when your thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones, which are crucial for regulating your metabolism. The most common treatment for this condition is hormone replacement therapy, typically using synthetic medications like levothyroxine, a synthetic form of T4.

However, there is another class of medications that is not as widely discussed but has been used for over a century: Natural Desiccated Thyroid (NDT). NDT contains a combination of both T4 and T3 thyroid hormones derived from animal (usually pig) thyroid glands. Popular brands include Armour ThyroidNP Thyroid, and the newer Adthyza. NDT has been a staple in thyroid treatment for many years, yet many doctors remain hesitant to prescribe it in favor of synthetic options.

Why? Despite its long history and proven track record of success for many patients, there are still some myths and misconceptions about NDT that can deter its use. In this post, I’ll address some of these myths based on my own research and experience. I hope this will provide you with some clarity and confidence when discussing treatment options with your doctor.

Myths About NDT and Why They Might Not Be True

1. NDT Causes Bone Loss & Heart Problems

This is one of the most common concerns doctors have when discussing NDT. They argue that it can cause bone loss or heart problems. While it’s true that thyroid hormone therapy, in general, can influence bone density and heart health, the claim is often overstated or misinterpreted. The risk of these side effects largely depends on the dosing and individual response to the medication.

In my view, patients who are struggling with symptoms of hypothyroidism, like fatigue and weight gain, might be more willing to accept a slight increase in risk for improved energy levels and better quality of life. For many, the benefits of symptom control outweigh the potential risks—especially when dosing is carefully monitored by a knowledgeable healthcare provider.

2. NDT is Not FDA-Approved

While it’s true that NDT was grandfathered in when the FDA began regulating medications, this does not mean it is unsafe. NDT has been in use since the 1890s and has a long history of safe and effective treatment. The FDA still oversees its production and ensures that manufacturers comply with its standards. So, while it may not have been subjected to the same modern approval process as newer drugs, NDT remains a well-regulated and trusted treatment for hypothyroidism.

3. NDT is Old-Fashioned

Some critics argue that NDT is outdated compared to newer medications. However, there’s no innovation to be found in thyroid treatments since NDT was introduced. Both synthetic and natural thyroid medications contain bioidentical hormones. In other words, the thyroid hormones in NDT are the same as those produced by your thyroid, just sourced from animals. The difference between NDT and synthetic medications lies in the balance of T4 and T3 hormones, with NDT providing both.

The reason many patients prefer NDT is that it delivers a more complete form of thyroid replacement. While T4 is the primary hormone produced by the thyroid, T3 is the active form that directly affects metabolism and energy levels. Synthetic medications like levothyroxine only provide T4, leaving your body to convert it into the active T3. For some patients, this conversion is not efficient, which is why they may feel better on NDT.

4. NDT Can Cause Mad Cow Disease

This claim is absolutely unfounded. While some forms of NDT were historically sourced from cows, the vast majority of NDT on the market today comes from pigs. And to date, there has never been a case of mad cow disease linked to NDT. This is simply a fear-based myth that has no basis in fact.

5. NDT Will Increase Thyroid Antibodies

Some doctors suggest that NDT could cause an increase in thyroid antibodies, especially in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease like Hashimoto’s. However, while it’s theoretically possible that the animal-derived ingredients in NDT could trigger an immune response, this is rare. In practice, many people with Hashimoto’s or other autoimmune conditions take NDT without issues. That said, if you do have autoimmune thyroid disease, it’s important to monitor your thyroid antibodies regularly and discuss any changes in your treatment with your doctor.

6. NDT Isn’t a “Real” Medication

This myth stems from a misunderstanding between NDT (a prescription medication) and thyroid glandulars (over-the-counter supplements). Thyroid glandulars are not standardized and do not contain the necessary amounts of thyroid hormones. NDT, on the other hand, is a regulated prescription medication with precise amounts of T4 and T3, ensuring that patients receive consistent and reliable treatment.

What Does This Mean for Your Treatment?

It’s important to recognize that NDT is not the right choice for everyone with hypothyroidism. Many people do perfectly well on synthetic thyroid medications like levothyroxine, and there is nothing wrong with sticking to that treatment plan if it works for you. However, if you’ve been struggling to find the right balance with your current medication, or if you’re experiencing persistent symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, or brain fog, it may be worth discussing NDT with your doctor.

Remember, this is just my personal viewpoint, and I’m not recommending that anyone change their treatment without consulting their healthcare provider first. I’m currently in the process of discussing these treatment options with my GP and will keep you posted on what I learn. If anything I’ve shared resonates with you, I encourage you to speak with your doctor about optimizing your thyroid treatment and whether NDT could be a suitable option for you.

At the end of the day, the goal is to feel your best and find a treatment plan that works for your body. Your health is important, and you deserve to feel energized, balanced, and at your best—so don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself and explore different options.
